Today I want to talk to those of you who hate exercise. I’m not talking about those that don’t have time to exercise, I’m talking to the ones that physically hate, mentally hate to exercise.
First of all I want you to know there is no way, it is impossible, to live a healthy lifestyle without regular exercise.
If you’ve not exercised in a while you will notice if you’ve not exercised in a while when you have trouble getting up and down the stairs without being winded. The heart is a muscle and you have to use it or it gets atrophy, it gets weak, and you will see that if you don’t exercise.
The first thing is we have to change that. If you hate to exercise, start with an attitude adjustment. While you are exercising if you have thoughts of dread and how much longer and I hate this, you have to switch those thoughts into positive ones.
A more positive thought process during exercise would be I can do this, only 10 more minutes, I’m burning calories with every movement, and this is making my body stronger. Over time those negative thoughts will tend to wain and you will see have more positive thoughts and it will make your workouts easier. Plus your workouts will get easier the stronger you get.
Now as far as what activity. I need you to think outside the box. There are things besides walking, jogging and going to the gym. You don’t have to do those things, particularly if you hate that activity.
Some things to consider when choosing how to exercise:
- are you a competitive person within a group? Then maybe a 5k is something you would enjoy.
- are you competitive within yourself? So you can set personal goals such as “this month I want to be able to walk 5 miles in xx amount of time” and next month you set your goal a bit higher.
- do you like to workout by yourself where nobody sees you? There are tons of online programs you can do in the comfort of you own home. You could have a small home gym, or buy a piece of equipment, there are lots of options for working out at home.
Think about where you like to exercise. If you like the outdoors, then get into hiking, mountain biking, walking outside, riding a bike outside. If you enjoy being outdoors then you’ll enjoy exercising outside more than indoors.
I had one client come in the other day and she said she doesn’t like to sweat. I had to think a minute about how to exercise without sweating….and I came up with it…swimming!
What we say here at Lifexcel Carolina is simply “that sweat is fat crying“.
Sit down, think outside of the box and ask yourself those questions that I’ve gone over above, brainstorm and come up with a plan. Put your plan into motion and have a positive attitude.
